When I think of Thanh My Restaurant in Westminster, CA I immediately go back to my college days when my lil sis Jennilee and I would do a midnight run to Westminster just to eat the best egg rolls EVER! Now let me get one thing straight, I am not a big fan of Pho. Unfortunately, my wife has Pho broth flowing through her veins so I am forced to eat at Pho restaurants on a regular basis. With that being said, I love the egg rolls at Thanh My Restaurant so much I am willing to eat Pho just so I can have the egg rolls. On second thought, I will just order two orders of the egg rolls.
Since I don’t like Pho, I typically eat Mì Khoâ Ñaêc Bieät (egg noodles). Now for those of you who don’t know the different let me break it down. Pho is rice noodles usually served in a beef broth soup. Egg noodles are usually served in either beef or pork broth soup. I like egg noodles because the noodles themselves have some flavor to them and a semi firm texture. Rice noodles on the other hand don’t really have a taste of their own, they just take on the flavor of the broth they are in. I also don’t like the texture of rice noodles because they disintegrate once they are in your mouth. Thanh My’s Mì Khoâ Ñaêc Bieät has friend shrimp, fish cakes, crab and a bunch of other stuff that taste pretty good. Although, next time I go I will probably just end up ordering two egg roll dishes and call it a day because the egg roll is the center of my attention at this restaurant.
If you’ve never eaten a Vietnamese fried egg roll the way you want to do it is eat it like a wrap. They always server egg rolls with lettuce, rice noodles and usually some picked carrots and/or daikon radish. At Thanh My they don’t offer the picked vegetables, but they don’t really need it. Now I know what you are going to say, “I thought you didn’t like rice noodles.” I don’t like rice noodles in Pho but I do like having a little bit of rice noodle with my egg roll because they soak up the fish sauce. What you want to do is wrap the egg roll with the lettuce and put some rice noodles inside as well. Then dip the whole thing into their fish sauce and eat it like a wrap.
My favorite Vietnamese drink/dessert has to be Che Ba Mau (three color dessert). I’ve had Che Ba Mau at many (too many) different Pho restaurants all across southern California and I have to say Thanh My has one of the best. They keep it simple and use just the traditional ingredients, none of the Americanized jelly that you see in all of the hypster boba shops popping up everywhere.
Now I probably cannot claim that Thanh My Restaurant has the best egg rolls in Orange County, just based off the fact that I haven’t tried every egg roll in Orange County. But I can say that thus far, Thanh My Restaurant has the best egg rolls that I have ever tried, hands down. If you know of another restaurant that has amazing egg rolls please let me know in the comments below because I would love to put them to the test.
