For all those chicken lovers out there (like my wife) that also enjoy spicy food, Chicken Maison in Santa Ana, CA is a must try. It is an inexpensive small restaurant that is a few blocks away from South Coast Plaza. My wife was introduced to this restaurant by some coworkers and she convinced me to check it out even though I am not a huge chicken eater…. at least I wasn’t until I ate at Chicken Maison.
Chicken Maison is a Greek style restaurant. Normally for Greek restaurant I only eat the Gyro (beef) but their signature dish is a spicy garlic lemon chicken. OMG, their chicken is a seriously mouth watering, it is extremely flavorful and it is so moist it feel like the meat falls off the bone… even though it wasn’t slow cooked. Their spicy garlic lemon seasoning is so good you can literally scoop it onto rice and ate that by itself. Now to be honest I haven’t tried much else on their menu other than their Gyro, which is good but not as good as their spicy garlic lemon chicken.
You know how there are restaurants that have a lot of good dishes, then there are the types of restaurants that only have one or two good dishes but they are so damn good you are willing to drive out of your way just to eat that one special dish? well, Chicken Maison is one of those smaller restaurants where I only go there for two dishes (spicy garlic lemon chicken and their baklava). For those that don’t know what Baklava is, it is originally a Turkish dessert but it is very popular in basically all of the middle eastern and Mediterranean countries. It is a semi sweet filo “puff” pastry that is stuffed with chopped nuts and usually sweetened with either syrup or honey. I’ve eaten a lot of Baklava in my life time and this place has one of the best I have ever had. A lot of times people mess up Baklava by adding too much syrup or honey, making it soggy and too sweet. The Baklava at Chicken Maison is lightly sweetened and very crispy. It is so good I would go out of my way to drive there just to pick up some Baklava for breakfast or for dessert. So if you are in the mood for good food at a low price, I highly recommend checking out Chicken Maison in Santa Ana, CA.
