Everyone that lives in southern California can agree that the best dan tat (Chinese egg tart) comes from the San Gabriel Valley, also known as the 626 area. Unfortunately, it is a far drive if you are coming from Orange County, CA. There are a few spots in Orange County that serves dan tat, but most of them are not very good. In this post, I will tell you where you can find the best dan tat in Orange County. However, please remember that this is just my opinion based on the type of dan tat that I like.
The best Dan Tat in OC
So far the best dan tat in Orange County that I have found is made by King Lobster (shown above), in the city of Orange. Their dan tat is a “signature crispy egg tart”, it has a nice flaky crust and their custard is sweet without being overly sweet. Their dan tat is also made into the perfect size so you get the right amount of crust and custard with every bite. To me, this is dan tat nirvana.
Good Dan Tat in Orange County
Another good dan tat is made by 85 C bakery (shown above) in Irvine, CA. Their Dan Tat is a “Portuguese egg tart”, it has a nice croissant like crust which is flaky and slightly chewy at the same time. You can easily tell a Portuguese style dan tat because the top looks a little burnt. Their custard is slightly sweet but the texture is a bit on the soggy side. Generally speaking, I don’t go to 85 degrees for the dan tat specifically, I go there for their other baked goods, but when I am there I usually pick up a few since I am already there.
Least favorite Dan Tat
My least favorite type of dan tat is the kind served at Capital Seafood, which is a traditional Kee Wah egg tart. Although the custard itself is good, the crust is not flaky at all. It has a cookie textured crust instead of a puff pastry crust. To me this is the McDonald’s cheese burger of the dan tat world. You know exactly what it is going to taste like so you order it when no other better option is around, but you know you aren’t getting the best.
I know there has to be other great dan tat places in Orange County, so this list will be updated as I try new places that are worth mentioning. If you have any suggestions on good dan tat places in OC, leave a comment so I can check it out.
