Assal Pastry (Irvine, CA)

assal pastry Napoleon
If you like sweets and your in the Irvine, CA area you need to try Assal Pastry.  This little Persian bakery is tucked away in the back of a shopping mall off Culver Drive and the 5 fwy (same parking lot as Buffalo Wild Wings).  Their #1 item has to be their Napoleon (shown above).  Layers of puff pastry holding together hand made whipped cream, topped with crushed pistachios and powdered sugar.  One thing to note, the pastry does not cut well, so you basically have to eat it as one big piece.  It will be messy, but damn it is good.

Assal Pastry Cone

Another item that I really enjoy is their cream filled cone.  This is a solid pastry filled with hand made whipped cream, covered with sugar crystals and sprinkled with crushed pistachios.  I give the Napoleon 5 star and the cone gets 4 stars, but the cone does keep over night better than the Napoleon.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Assal Pastry’s other items.  They have cakes, fruit tarts, baklava and other Persian desserts.  Some of them are okay, but none of them are worth bragging about other than the Napoleon and the Cone.

Warning, the service there is not the best.  I think this place has been around for so long that they mainly thrive on regular customers, so if you are new don’t expect 5 star service.  Just order your Napoleon and enjoy!
