Ever since an awesome “Green” Juice Bar opened up right next to my work (Nekter Juice Bar) I started getting into juicing and drinking juices for lunch. It really helps you feel lighter, more energetic, and healthier to drink freshly juiced fruits and vegetables instead of eating a heavy or greasy lunch. Don’t get me wrong, I still eat lunch from time to time, but I try to just drink juice at least 2 – 3 times a week during lunch. Ever since I got into juicing I’ve been trying to make difference recipes and so far this is my favorite drink to make:
To make one drink all you need is:
- 3 – 4 steams of Green Kale
- 1 – 2 steams of Collard Greens
- 1 Granny Smith Apple
- 1/2 – 1 cup of Orange Juice
Ideally you should use fresh oranges but if you are like me your are already doing good if you got the first three ingredients all in fresh condition, so I usually just use pasteurized natural orange juice. Plus, since I am lactose intolerant I need as much Calcium as I can get, so I use OJ that has calcium in it. If you use a blender or magic bullet with a strainer then you can use less Kale and Collard Greens because you actually get more of the nutrients when you strain it manually. However, if you are lazy and you use a juicer then I suggest you use more of each because although juicers are great for juicing hard fruit and vegetables, they typically do not do such a great job with green leafy vegetables. It ends up extracting minimal juice since it tends to shred the greens to release the inner juice. To get the most out of greens you need to press it (squeeze the juice out). What I usually do is I use a blender and a juicer, I first blend it and strain it. Then I take the leftover remains and press it into a ball shape and then send that into the juicer. That way I get the most out of all of the fruits and vegetables.
I hope you enjoy this drink as much as I do, just remember to drink it within a day of making it because it does not have preservatives and freshly juiced greens are best fresh! I try my best to make juices on a regular basis but I tend to work so much during work hours and during my off hours so I end up buying a lot of juices on the go as well. So my favorite juice bar by far is Nekter Juice Bar, in Costa Mesa.
